FAITH IS OPENNESS TO GOD AND A WILLINGNESS TO RECEIVE HIS WORD
The Jewish faith and the Christian faith are intrinsically the same but we do not realise their unity because we divide them into the what is termed old and what is termed new, and into Jew and Christian. The fact is they are compatible records of God’s gift of faith to the Jew first, and then the world.
Divisions and differences exist in all faiths because they are passed on by traditions, opinions and authorities, not by their spiritual roots. True faith is God’s gift to mankind and is more than traditions, opinions or shibboleths. The unity of God’s gift of faith is in God’s Word which is life and Spirit. ‘My word, is a lamp unto your feet and a light to your path,’ says the Lord. (Psalm 119:105)
Jesus said to the Scribes, ‘Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God?’ (Matthew 22:29)
And Solomon in Proverbs said, ‘Every word of God proves true. He defends all who come to him for protection. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you, and you be found a liar.’ (Proverbs 30:5)
The Word of God is not an opinion or a philosophy, nor is it a theology because God cannot be studied like a physical object. Please read the article ‘The bible is the Word of God.’ By the bible I mean the seamless unity between the Old and New Testaments. Faith in God’s Word is not a philosophy, as if by thinking about God’s Word, we can replace it with science. That is a deleterious and detrimental approach to God who desires only that we receive his word and trust him. That is why Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matthew 18:3) This applies to the Jew, and the Gentile. We cannot fit God into a synagogue a mosque or a church. The Ecclesia, God’s people, must fit into God’s revelation of himself, his word and deeds. This is always in the past, the present and the future which is why we wait on God to be the Light we need to face each day and the next.
